With a height of 125 Mtrs (410 Ft) to blade tips. Energia in Natura will be making an application, supported by an Environmental Statement, to South Lakeland District Council for permission to construct the wind farm probably some time this year. At the 2009 Annual General Meeting of The Cark and District Angling Association it was decided unanimously to petition against the erection of this Wind Farm as soon as Energia in Natura of Italy submit their planning application to SLDC for the reasons given below.
Burn's Beck originates from a spring above Speel Bank on the top of Stribers. It runs down through an ancient wet woodland where it forms the start of Burn's Beck just above Speel Bank Farm, it drops from the farm down into the small valley floor to Burn's Farm and into Mill Dam, from here it becomes Mill Dam brook which flows down through Walton Hall Farm into the River Eea below Cartmel.
There is currently a project in progress run by the South Cumbria Rivers Trust addressing the problem of reduced Brown Trout stocks in the River Eea, the tributory from Mill Dam Brook up through Burn's Beck has been identified as a most important spawning area for specifically Brown Trout native to the River Eea. With the introduction of the " National Trout & Grayling Strategy" by the Environment Agency the agency hopes to achieve the following; "The aim of this strategy is to conserve and improve wild stocks of trout, sea trout, char and grayling, while enhancing the environment for all types of fisheries for these species in England and Wales. It also aims to enhance the social and economic benefits derived from these fisheries." This surely demonstrates the importance of conserving our native Brown Trout, electro-fishing has shown that there are currently good stocks of fry and parr in this tributory, any disturbance at the source would be catastrophic.
There are many more issues concerning the placement of this wind farm other than those of concern to The Cark and District Angling Association, for more information go to the Website link here - Stop Cartmel Wind Turbines.
